Neil Young will play four benefit concerts in Canadian cities to raise money for the legal defense fund of the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation, a Native American group based in Alberta that is suing Shell Canada to prevent it from undertaking oil sands extraction projects that the group says will encroach on lands and resources protected by an 1899 treaty. Mr. Young is presenting the concerts in association with Honor the Treaties, an organization that advocates for Native American treaty rights, using the arts to get its message across. The performances, which will also include sets by the jazz singer Diana Krall, are in Toronto, Winnipeg, Regina and Calgary.
