'LIFT' by the Alvin Ailey Dance Troupe at City Center

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater continued its run at City Center on Thursday and Friday nights with two more showings of "Revelations," a gorgeous rendition of Ronald K. Brown's "Grace" and a ponderous addition to the repertory that takes advantage of the Ailey dancers but gives them little in return. Jamar Roberts, the dance's muscular centerpiece, leads a group of men in crouching unison moves in which they repeatedly and forcibly, like warriors, slap their legs. Before the curtain rose on "Revelations," Mr. Battle appeared to speak a few words; with shaking hands, he read from Maya Angelou's "When Great Trees Fall" - the same poem Ms. Angelou read at Ailey's funeral service - before dedicating the evening's performance of "Revelations" to Nelson Mandela, who died on Thursday at 95. "Revelations" is a ravishing, emotionally charged and exquisitely structured work, but the aura surrounding the dance is starting to dissipate.
